ITINERARY - SESSION TWO

  1. Thursday 6/24
    Travel to Florence; depart USA on a scheduled International flight with your faculty member and cross International Time Zones. Arrive the next day in the afternoon.

  2. Friday 6/25
    Arrive this afternoon in Florence. If you traveled with the scheduled group flight, meet ARTIS rep at airport to receive apartment keys and addresses. Take taxis to apartments. Rest, recuperation and unpacking. Find way back to train station

  3. Saturday 6/26
    AM-Orientation. Meet at the train station. Tour of train station facilities Tour to the Central Market for food shopping then to ARTIS/Fuji Studio for orientation, lunch and discussion of Program, introductions and safety lecture. Then a walking tour from the studio to the Duomo, and medieval section of Florence. Return to central market to rent/buy cell phones if interested. Finish around 5:30 PM

  4. Sunday 6/27
    AM-Meet at ARTIS/ Fuji Studio for safety lecture followed by the second half of the walking tour to the photo store, Last Supper P.za San Marco, P.za Santissima Annunziata, return to central market or super market to buy food, etc.

  5. Monday 6/28
    AM a visit to the church of Santa Maria Novella, with frescoes by Filippo Lippi, Paolo Uccello, Masaccio’s Holy Trinity and a wooden Crucifix by Brunelleschi. We’ll continue on to the Romanesque church of San Lorenzo with remodeling by Brunelleschi and pulpits by Donatello. We’ll also see the old Sacristy. Finish around 1:30 PM.Afternoon free for art making.
    Evening: Optional (Fee) Italian cooking class and dinner.

  6. Tuesday 6/29
    Free Day .
    You might want to go visit on your own, the Pitti Palace. First stop at the Church of Santa Felicita to see paintings by Pontormo. On to the Pitti and visit the Galleria Palatina, with works by Raffaello, Giorgione, Tiziano, Rubens and others. Or opt to visit the Silver Museum and the Modern Gallery with it’s collection of Italian Impressionist called the Macchiaioli. PM- An afternoon stroll and art making in the romantic Boboli Gardens behind the Palace.

  7. Wednesday 6/30
    Free Day .

    SECOND WEEK

  8. Thursday 7/1
    AM- Field trip to the Duomo, Florence’s most famous landmark and Europe’s third largest cathedral. An arduous but amazing climb through Brunelleschi’s remarkable double dome leads us to the top with its aerial view of Florence and the Arno valley. We’ll complete the morning with a visit to the Baptistery and view its bronze doors by Pisano and Ghiberti and the 13th century mosaics of the “Last Judgement.” Finish around 1:00 PM Afternoon free for art making.
    PM-Meet at ARTIS/ Fuji Studio for first art history lecture followed by morning field trip.

  9. Friday 7/2
    PM we’ll visit the Accademia, home of Michelangelo’s David and his unfinished Slaves as well as other works of art. Stay and sketch at the feet of the David inside of the Accademia.

  10. Saturday 7/3
    AM- Lecture then Critique or art making.
    PM- We’ll tour the world renowned Uffizi Art Galleries. See Italian masterpieces from the Gothic to the Baroque by such artists as Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Masaccio, Uccello, Fra Angelico, Giotto, Filippo Lippi, Botticelli, Raffaello, and Caravaggio. Finish around 5PM

  11. Sunday 7/4
    No lecture. Morning excursion to go out of town to Pratalino and Villa Demidoff. Return as you like in PM

  12. Monday 7/5
    Free Day Option (fee) to go to Cinque Terre and the seaside for a day at the beach.

  13. Tuesday 7/6
    Free Day

  14. Wednesday 7/7
    Our tour begins with a walk to the Duomo Museum and see a sculptured Pieta by Michelangelo, Donatello’s and Della Robbia’s Cantorie, Donatello’s Mary Magdalen plus Pisano’s original door panels. Finish around 1
    PM Afternoon art making can be inside the Duomo museum.

    THIRD WEEK

  15. Thursday 7/8
    AM- A visit to the Medici Chapels. See incredible inlaid stone work and Michelangelo’s renowned marble sculptures known as Dawn & Dusk and Day & Night.

  16. Friday 7/9
    AM- A morning walk to the National Museum (Bargello). This Medieval Palace now contains priceless sculptures with works by Michelangelo and his students, Cellini, Giambologna and others. It also contains a Museum of Minor Arts, with carved ivory, jewelry, tapestry, armor and ceramics. Finish around 1 PM

  17. Saturday 7/10
    AM-Our day-long excursion will take us through the beautiful Tuscan countryside to Siena. We’ll first visit the Church of San Domenico and see the shrine that contains the mummified head of the renowned Saint Katherine. The Etruscan design for the layout of this hilltop town can easily be seen. We will visit the civic Museums. Then explore the back streets on a leisurely stroll to the Gothic Cathedral with frescoes by Pinturicchio .
    PM- Continue our tour to the Medieval hill town of San Gimignano, the city of towers. Return to Florence around 7 PM.

  18. Sunday 7/11
    Free Day

  19. Monday 7/12
    Free Day
    PM- We’ll all gather for a big farewell ice cream party and slide show. later this evening at the studio.

  20. Tuesday 7/13
    Final personal reviews and critiques or free day. Start packing for return to USA. Clean apts. Last Free day in Florence. Apartments cleaned and checked.

  21. Wednesday 7/14
    Leave by early morning shuttle bus or taxis to airport. Return flight to USA, cross International Time Zones and arrive home the same day
